Hard to Imagine Christmas Without Flowers

It’s hard to imagine Christmas without flowers isn’t it? All around the world, flowers are a significant part of Christmas decorations. Mistletoe, poinsettias and the Christmas cactus are just a few of the flowers that are part of the tradition of Christmas

Poinsettias, also known as The Christmas Flower, have become as much a symbol of Christmas as Christmas trees and mistletoe. The poinsettia comes from Mexico and gets it name from the first ambassador to Mexico, Joel Roberts Poinsett. After finding the beautiful plant on the side of the road, he introduced the plant to the United States in 1828 when he began cultivating the plant in his greenhouses in South Carolina, The plant was called Euphorbia Pulcherrima but as it began to gain popularity William Prescott was asked to re-name the plant. He chose to name it after Joel Roberts Poinsett who discovered the plant. The poinsettia is the number one selling potted plant in North America. In the six week period before Christmas, poinsettia sales will top $250 million. Not bad for a plant found on the side of the road..

The widespread belief that poinsettias are poisonous is a misconception. The safety of poinsettias in the home is demonstrated in scientific studies conducted by Ohio State University in cooperation with the Society of American Florists. The study concluded that no toxicity was evident at experimental ingestion levels far exceeding those likely to occur in a home environment.

Even though poinsettias can be found at almost any store you walk into, from hardware stores to grocery stores, the best place to purchase poinsettias is from a local professional florist.
